Political History of the Western Reserve

~   The Connecticut Western Reserve was and continues to be an important political force in the region,
    the state, and the Nation.
~   Early Ohio and national politics were influenced by men and women from the Western Reserve.
~  Peter Hitchcock, an early settler in Burton (Geauga County) is considered the "Father of the Ohio
    Constitution".
~  James Garfield, 20th President of the United States grew up in the Western Reserve.
 ~ And Womens Suffrage had significant support from the men and women of the Western Reserve.
~  Newbury Township (Geauga County) was known for local demonstrations and meetings in support
    of women's rights in the early 1900s.
~  Among the Civil Rights and Suffrage leaders to speak at Newbury's Union Chapel were Susan B.
    Anthony, Lucy Stone, and Louisa May Alcott.
~  The Newbury Womens Suffrage Club, established in 1874,was one of the earliest to be established.
~   The Union Chapel - a nondescript 1800s wooden structure still standing in South Newbury - was
    called the "shrine" and is considered to be the "cradle" of the women's suffrage movement.
